Family Reunion in Black Culture

This past weekend I had the privilege of attending my family’s annual reunion. A ritual that has taken place in my family for 65 years! Our family gets together at the same time every year. This is actually the only time that I see some of my cousins.

Our family is very fortunate to know our history dating back to slavery. We share that history every year and it becomes common knowledge among our family members.

Of course I’ve attended this event almost every year of my life (my mother makes me), but this year I really found value in it.

As adults we have such busy life styles. It is almost impossible to do everything that we want to do. Balancing work and life is difficult enough. In life, when we spend time with our family, typically its our immediate family only. Family reunions gives us time to spend with our extended family too. This year I found so much value in spending time and laughing with my extended family.

I am not familiar with how other cultures practice this ritual. In the Black culture we eat, laugh, and dance. We celebrate each other’s accomplishments. We take pictures and share old stories.  Some families spend the whole weekend filled with fun activities! I really love that  knowing where you come from is  so important in our culture.

Comment on how your family reunites every year!!!!!

  1. Hey glad you had fun with your family!! Mostly, I see my extended family during the holidays, but most recently, we had an impromptu mini reunion with my dad’s side at Golden Corral. A cousin I haven’t seen in like more than 15 years was in town!! Good times!!
